Dir: Shyama prasad
Cast: Dileep, Mamta Mohandas, Samvritha Sunil
THE BASICS: Inspired from Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhyay’s short story, Arike (So Close), the film is mainly focused on the three main characters, played by Dileep, Mamta and Samvritha.
THE PLOT: Shanthanu (Dileep) is a researcher in literature and is madly in love with Kalpana (Samvritha Sunil). Though they live in the modern times, their romance is pretty old fashioned and they express their love for each other through letters. Anuradha (Mamta Mohandas), a college lecturer, is their friend who supports their romance. But things don’t work the way they would have liked.
THE REVIEW: With an annoyingly pretentious style, Arike turns out to be a rather ordinary attempt, at best. The Bengali shades are evident for all the characters and even for the settings. If you look beyond all these, the intensity of Sunil Gangopadhyay’s characters will attract you.
Dileep looks totally out of place, while the girls come up with a good show.
