DID YOU KNOW? Director Priyanandanan has won national acclaim for his earlier films Neythukaran and Pulijanmam. His latest film, Sufi Paranja Katha, is based on writer K P Ramanunni’s award winning novel. Sharbani Mukherji, who plays the lead in the film, has earlier acted in J P Dutta’s Border and Priyadarshan’s Rakkilippaattu. Prakash Bare, the producer and lead actor, is originally a techie based in the Silicon Valley. Actor Babu Antony plays the role of Sufi or a Muslim mystic, while his brother Thampi Antony plays an important role in the film.
STORYLINE: Karthi (Sharbani Mukherji) is a beautiful young girl in the prestigious Meleppullara tharavadu. She shares some kind of a curious relationship with her uncle Sanku Menon (Thampi Antony). Later on, she is attracted to a handsome Muslim trader, Maamootty (Prakash Bare) and they elope to his place.
Their life was a happy one in the beginning and Karthi becomes a Muslim. But she realizes soon after that her original beliefs and ethos are tough to be renounced. With her husband’s consent, she builds a temple near their home. Things take some unexpected turns and it becomes a communal issue.
REVIEW: Sufi Paranja Katha has amazing relevance in today’s scheme of things and it will have significance till our society changes its mindset. Well, that is quite unlikely as well! The film scores especially due to its topical importance and it has been well made. Watch it to appreciate the honesty!
Priyanandanan handles a sensitive theme with maturity and the performances are all very good. Sharbani oozes that sensuality which the character needs, Prakash Bare does his part with remarkable ease and Thampi Antony has the physique to look perfect for the role. Jagathy Sreekumar as Avaru Musaliar shines and so does the rest of the cast which includes Babu Antony, Vineeth Kumar, Samvritha Sunil, Irshad and Indrans.
HIGHS: Highly relevant and genuine theme
LOWS: The conventional style of making
Verdict: 4 out of 5 (EXCELLENT)
